How Much Does Home Visit Physiotherapy Cost?

If you are weighing up home visit physiotherapy, cost is usually one of the first questions, and it is a fair one. The honest answer is that it depends on a few things: the type of appointment, whether it is your first session or a follow-up, where you live, and importantly how your treatment is funded. This guide breaks down what you actually pay for, how home visit fees compare to a clinic, and the funding options that can cover some or all of the cost.

What You Are Paying For With Home Visit Physiotherapy

A home visit is not simply a clinic appointment in a different room. Your physiotherapist travels to you, brings the necessary equipment, and dedicates one-on-one time to your assessment and treatment in your own environment. The fee generally reflects:

  • The physiotherapist’s time and clinical expertise
  • Travel to and from your home
  • Equipment brought to the session
  • The administrative work behind your care, such as treatment planning and progress notes

How Much Does Physiotherapy Cost in Australia?

As a general guide, clinic based physiotherapy in Australia commonly sits between $90 and $160 for an initial consultation. Home visit physiotherapy is typically priced above clinic rates, because the fee accounts for the physiotherapist’s travel time and the equipment they bring to you. Most private home visit consultations in Sydney fall in the range of $110 to $180, depending on session length and location.

Home visit physiotherapy can sit slightly above a standard clinic rate because of the travel involved, but as we explain below, that gap often closes once you account for the real cost of getting to a clinic.

Do Home Visits Cost More Than Clinic Visits?

On the headline fee alone, a home visit may be a little higher than a clinic appointment. But the clinic price rarely tells the whole story. When you visit a clinic you also pay, in money or in time, for:

  • Fuel or public transport to and from the appointment
  • Parking
  • Time off work, or time away from caring responsibilities
  • For people with limited mobility, the cost of a taxi, support worker or family member to help them get there

For older patients, people recovering from surgery, and anyone with reduced mobility, those hidden costs add up quickly and can be more stressful than the treatment itself. A home visit removes them entirely. You are treated in your own home, at a time that suits you, with no travel and no waiting room.

How Funding Can Cover the Cost

For many of our patients, home visit physiotherapy is partly or fully funded. The main pathways are:

  • NDIS: If physiotherapy is in your plan, it can be funded under the relevant supports. We work with self-managed, plan-managed and agency-managed participants. See our NDIS physiotherapy page for details.
  • Aged care: Older Australians may have physiotherapy funded through Support at Home (which replaced Home Care Packages from 1 November 2025), the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) or DVA. More on our physiotherapy for the elderly page.
  • Workers compensation: If you are recovering from a work injury, your treatment may be covered under your claim. See our workers compensation physiotherapy page.
  • CTP and motor vehicle accidents: If you were injured in a road accident, physiotherapy is often covered under a CTP claim. More on our CTP and motor vehicle accident page.
  • Medicare: Under a Chronic Disease Management plan from your GP, you may be eligible for a limited number of subsidised sessions per year.
  • Private health insurance: If you hold extras cover that includes physiotherapy, you can usually claim a portion of each session. Check your level of cover and any annual limits with your fund.

If you are unsure which of these applies to you, call us on 1300 001 792 and we will help you work it out before you commit to anything.

Is Home Visit Physiotherapy Worth the Cost?

The value of a home visit is not only convenience. Being treated where you live means your physiotherapist can see the real spaces where you move, rest and recover, and tailor your programme to them, from the height of your bed to the steps at your front door. Treatment tends to be more consistent too, because there is nothing to travel to, which matters a great deal when you are rehabilitating an injury or managing a long-term condition. For many people, that consistency is what makes the difference to their recovery, and it is hard to put a price on getting back on your feet sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a physiotherapy session cost?

A standard physiotherapy session in Australia typically falls between roughly $70 and $120, with initial assessments usually higher. Home visit fees reflect the added travel and equipment involved. You can contact us to know our prices, and we are happy to confirm everything when you book.

Is the first appointment more expensive?

Usually yes. Initial assessments take longer and are more thorough than follow-ups, so they generally cost more. After that, follow-up sessions are charged at the standard rate.

Can I claim home visit physiotherapy on private health insurance?

If your extras cover includes physiotherapy, you can generally claim a portion of each session. The exact rebate depends on your fund and level of cover, so it is worth checking your limits beforehand.

Does Medicare cover physiotherapy?

Medicare can subsidise a limited number of physiotherapy sessions each year if your GP sets up a Chronic Disease Management plan and refers you. Outside of that, physiotherapy is generally a private or otherwise funded service.

Do I have to pay upfront if I am on NDIS or aged care funding?

Not usually. Where your treatment is funded through NDIS, aged care, workers compensation or CTP, we work within those arrangements. Get in touch and we will explain exactly how billing works for your situation.
